Despite what some might believe, Canadian travellers are not guaranteed free healthcare in countries around the world!

Even countries with universal healthcare systems may charge foreign visitors for medical treatment, including emergency care and hospitalization.

Don’t believe it? Let’s take a look at just a handful of the many countries where Canadians aren’t entitled to completely free medical treatment:

  • 🇧🇿 Belize — Medical facilities may require immediate cash payment for treatment. Medical evacuation can also be very expensive.1
  • 🇭🇳 Honduras — Travellers may incur medical expenses even when receiving treatment at public hospitals. Hospitals frequently require advance payment or proof of insurance.2
  • 🇫🇷 France — Canadian tourists are not automatically entitled to free healthcare. Hospitals and medical facilities may require upfront payment for treatment.3
  • 🇨🇳 China — Payment for medical treatment is generally expected at the time of service.4
  • 🇦🇷 Argentina — Hospital physicians often expect immediate cash payment for medical care.5

The takeaway: Before travelling to anywhere, be sure to purchase comprehensive travel medical insurance that includes emergency hospitalization and medical evacuation.

Don’t let a common misconception become an expensive vacation souvenir.
